Flutie Flakes: the Series

Who would be the best actor to play Doug Flutie in a TV show based on is life?

Ahh yes Doug Flutie, beloved of undersized men everywhere.  To decide upon an actor to portray Flutie, at least two things must be decided: what kind of TV show would it be, and what era of Flutie’s life would be covered. Unless you answer with a Roots like docudrama chronicling his entire life, which I don’t think anyone would watch, some specifics must be nailed down.  I would narrow down our options to a Dawson’s Creek style teen drama covering his years and heroics at Boston College, a Hogan’s Hero’s futile escape comedy take on the time Flutie spent languishing in the Canadian Football League, or a feel good family sitcom, taking place during his late career renaissance in Buffalo, something akin to Charles In Charge or Full House.

I would like to see the third option on television, just because Flutie has that Danny Tanner nice-guy, father-figure quality.  So now that we have determined which Flutie will be portrayed it helps set some parameters as to who will fill his size 7 cleats.   It must be a charming actor, handsome but not pretty, with the believable qualities of a leader on the field and the kind of guy who would help you through some minor problems amongst your friends.  After discarding Scott Baio and Tony Danza, as both too old and maybe a little too obviously Italian, I realized the man for the job is Mark Ruffalo, late of The Avengers fame.  I understand he is now a big time movie star actor and might not want to do a sitcom but the obvious challenge of bringing a man like Doug Flutie to the small screen is a proposition no actor dedicated to his craft could resist, so whoever is reading this and has connections in basic cable, please make sure this gets on the right desk and bring this vision into living rooms everywhere next fall.

How to Succeed in Business and Love while actually Trying

Is it more important in life to have successful relationships and love or to have a successful professional career? is it possible to have both?

That is a question that everyone has to answer for themselves.  It is one of those decisions reached while evaluating your priorities and really deciding what is important in life.  That being said, I believe it is sometimes possible to have both but not without sacrifice and work, and sometimes it is not.  A successful relationship is often important to more than just the people into it, and can have outreaching positive effects on many.  Or it can just annoy your friends and possibly destroy your life.  The same can be said as to the single-minded pursuit of one”s career.  Depending on what you are doing, it might be more important than your own personal happiness, i.e. you have the opportunity to help millions of people, that is if you subscribe to the notion of utilitarianism, the good of the many outweighs the good of the one.  Conversely, Ghandi speaks of being the “change you want to see in the world,” which I interpret as the way you lead your life, including chasing personal happiness, can indeed affect greater good in the outside world.  In all things, however, balance is the secret ingredient to a delicious life.  A career you are passionate about and which fulfills and hopefully supports you enriches a relationship in many ways and the support and love that a good relationship provides is crucial to sustain a challenging career, a career that would require devotion and yield satisfaction and success.

How to Live (the musings of a guy who has obviously figured it all out)

which do you think is a healthier way of living: live as if you will die tomorrow or live as if you’re immortal? Or do you think it depends on the person?

This question is more suited for a freshman year essay in Practical  Philosophy, alas such a course did not exist at my college, than a short and punchy blog entry but here goes.  The first question needing answering is what is the definition of healthy?  We will define two of the aspects of “health” as physical health, maintaining the efficiency and effectiveness of bodily functions or its Cartesian dichotomy as spiritual well-being, i.e. inner peace, happiness and being fulfilled with the course of your life.  Either way of living can cause problems with both ideas of health.  Living as if you will die tomorrow can cause one to make rash decisions and shortsighted choices, possibly resulting in bodily harm, while satisfying the mental aspect of satisfaction with  a life lived to the proverbial “max.”  Living as if you were immortal can cause one to put off opportunities, to procrastinate towards fulfilling your potential, and deferring your dreams.  The way, in my humble and often contrarian opinion,  to live your life is as if you have 80 or so years to live it, but that time is a precious commodity so make the best use of it.  In other words, don’t put off doing the things you want but also consider the consequences of actions taken in the short, mid, and long-term.  Simple as that.  Have some fun and make it count.

Battle of the Goats

The question was: Who would win in a fight? Baltimore’s kicker or #10 on the 49′ers?

First off let me apologize for the lateness of my answer, I was busy practicing my place kicking.  Word on the street is an AFC North contender is going to be looking for a new kicker.  Now if I answer the letter of your question, if an actual physical confrontation broke out between these two guys, I think the winner would be obvious.  Although both gaffes took place on special teams, one is also a wide receiver  and so accustomed to the physicality of playing in the NFL, not to mention some kick returners get walloped on the run back.  So unless Billy Cundiff lines up behind Kyle Williams and starts literally kicking his ass, my moneys on the player with a future.  If the question was who will win THE fight, get over their huge mistake, made in front of millions of viewers, and continue on with this career, I believe the victor remains the same.  Cundiff has one task, which he blew, and every time he goes up for a field goal or point after, some asinine sportscaster will bring it up.  Williams runs back a couple punts for touchdowns, makes some great grabs at wide receiver, and his bungle will be a thing of the past.  Unless Cundiff can prove it was the ghost of the guy Ray Lewis murdered who spectrally hooked the ball wide from beyond the grave as vengeance.

Lo, there shall come a Blog Man

Hello and welcome to the first post of my first blog.  This will be a forum for you, the curious masses, to ask a philosopher and compendium of knowledge, questions, to be answered in the inimitable style of the author.   The questions can be anything from opinions on current events (but who really cares to hear the opinion of anyone other than themselves) to queries of a more existential type.  Also trivia.  So have at it, and lets see what burning questions are on the mind of the collective consciousness of the world wide web.  Ask me some questions by commenting on this post, and I’ll select the ones I want, nay need, to answer.  Extra credit for anyone who gets the title.
